How to Use TRAK
A quick guide to finding, exploring, and downloading Kentucky transportation data.
TRAK brings together data from across the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet into one place, so you can explore performance data, follow projects, and build custom reports without waiting on a manually prepared report. This guide walks through the main areas of the site and how to get the most out of each one.
1. Find the Right Tool
TRAK is organized around a few core areas, each suited to a different kind of question.
Looking for something specific? Use the Data Hub Search box at the top of every page with a specific term, such as “pavement condition” or “bridge inventory,” or browse the Data Hub to see every available dataset.
2. Navigate a Report
Most TRAK reports are organized into the same set of tabs, so once you know one report, you know how to move around the rest. Not every report has every tab.
- Details — the main view: key figures, charts, and trends for the topic.
- Data — the records behind the charts, in a table you can scroll and review.
- Map — the same information plotted across the state, so you can see where things are happening.
- FAQ — definitions, data sources, and notes on how that report’s figures are calculated.
Not sure where a number comes from? Check that report’s FAQ tab first. It usually explains the source and the calculation.
3. Filter and Explore the Data
Filters on each report
Use the filters on a report page, such as District and County, to narrow it to the area you care about. The charts, tables, and maps on the page update to match. Selecting a bar, a slice, or an area on the map also filters the rest of the page. Clear your selections to return to the statewide view.
Data Analysis Tool
When a standard report doesn’t answer your question, the Data Analysis Tool lets you build your own chart from TRAK’s datasets:
- Pick a dataset from the Dataset menu.
- Choose what to chart with Dimension, Measure, and Split by. For example, the number of bridges in each district, split by condition.
- Narrow it down with Sort, Show (such as the top 10), and the year slider on datasets that cover several years.
- Drill into the records by clicking a bar or slice, which filters the data table below it. Each column in the table has its own filter too.
- Switch to Map View for bridges and pavement to filter by district, county, and condition.
HIVEi and Traffic Counts have their own map filters for routes and count stations.
4. Download or Share What You Find
Most datasets in the Data Hub and Data Analysis Tool can be downloaded directly for use in your own analysis. Look for a download button on the dataset or report view. Because TRAK's ETLs refresh automatically, downloaded data reflects the most recent available extract rather than a report that may already be out of date.
